Edouard Manet was a French painter born in 1832 in Paris into an upper-class family with political ties. He was one of the first artists to paint modern life whose career fell over the span of Realism into Impressionism. Manet’s style was characterized by loose brush strokes, melding his foreground and background together. He painted many contemporary subjects alongside religious, mythological and historical subjects.
